One advantage Jackson had was that he didn't have to compete visually with an earlier adaptation (the cartoons don't really merit comparison).

A new Dune movie could very well surpass Lynch's in storytelling, but I'll be surprised if it can equal it in style.

A new Dune Movie? It could be a great movie, IF the filmakers pay extreme attention to the details in the book. But I don't see that happeneing. I don't expect it to be as good a rendition as Jackson's LOTR movies. But I'm a hardcore Dune fan and have re-read the novels as well, of course I'm going to see it.

The best kind of trainwreck, like a gothic industrial vision.

Will bump them further down the reading list accordingly.

Thanks for stopping by.

Hrm. If you think Lynch's Dune was a trainwreck, perhaps you better not read the new books. I read the first two or three--I forget, but I'm pretty certain I chucked one of the books across the room at some point.

Penny Arcade made a pretty pointed comic about it even. If'n you love the books, stop with Frank's.

Thanks. My own tastes often do run to the mainstream. I'm a populist as long as what's popular is what I like. Otherwise the world is full of fools. As for F&SF, most of the stories I dislike are the ones that turn tricks in a literary sense--they pull high-brow stunts but forget to tell a worthwhile story. I'm finding fewer of those than I once thought I would.

Haven't read F & SF Magazine for awhile and it sounds like that's been my loss. Perhaps it's always seemed a bit mainstream and tame for my tastes, not enough fiction showing innovation, stylistic and thematic breaks with tradition. Might give it another chance, somewhere down the road. Good post, thoughtful comments and critiques of the prose...

Hi,

I feel the same way. It was much hard work. But when I went back to reread it last week, I could have gagged. Of course, after going through the story dozens of times, revising, proofing, ect--I'm SICK of reading it. I only got a couple of pages before I had to stop. 'Appallingly mediocre' sums it up perfectly.

Best wishes!
Chris
